Long Barrack Archaeology Update - July 12

July 12, 2024

Archaeologists worked in three excavation units this week-EUs-15, 16 and 18. EUs 16 and 18 are new units that were started this week.

In EU-15, archaeologists worked in the southeast corner and dug to the required depth of 80 cm below surface. Various soil types were identified within multiple levels- Sandy loam, clay loam, silty clay, and silty loam. The artifact density was moderate, with artifacts such as ceramics, metal, lithics, glass, and building materials.

Archaeologists began excavations in EU-16. A depth of approximately 40 cm below surface was reached by the end of the week. The soils encountered this week consists of modern landscape; however, a limestone and sandy mortar concentration was encountered in the northern extent of the unit. Artifacts encountered include ceramic, glass, metal, personal items, building materials, and firearm ammunition.

Excavations in EU-18 also began this week. Archaeologists encountered landscaping fill and reached a depth of approximately 40 cm below surface. The recent deposition of landscaping fill contains modern and older artifacts.
