The Alamo is pleased to announce the upcoming restoration of the cherished Alamo Cenotaph, underscoring our commitment to preserving this iconic monument in its original location for future generations. Following the completion of a comprehensive structural investigation of the monument, restoration work will begin in January 2025. This vital project is scheduled to conclude before the Fall of 2025 and will be managed by contractor Clark-Guido, with oversight from Architexas, the project's Architect of Record.

Preserve in Place
Preserving the Alamo Cenotaph, also known as The Spirit of Sacrifice, in its current location is paramount to honoring its legacy and ensuring that future generations can continue to connect with its historical importance. The restoration work for the over eighty-year-old monument will be carried out in strict accordance with the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. A dedicated team of experts from Clark-Guido, who played a crucial role as an original contractor in constructing the Cenotaph, will execute the restoration with meticulous care and adherence to these standards as the project’s general contractor. They will be overseen by Architexas, the architect of record, along with the Alamo Trust, Inc., who will ensure that all necessary permits from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) are obtained for this significant preservation effort.

During the restoration process, any stones that are carefully removed from the Cenotaph will remain on the Alamo grounds, ensuring they stay on site throughout the duration of the project.

Addressing Structural Needs
The recently conducted Structural Integrity Report has identified several critical areas that require immediate attention to ensure the long-term stability and preservation of the Alamo Cenotaph. These include concrete and structural repairs, waterproofing, coating, stone cleaning and patching, raking of mortar joints, and the installation of a new functional drainage system. While these repairs necessitate the careful removal of stones from the Cenotaph to access its internal structure for restoration, this process is crucial to guarantee the monument remains for generations to come.

Safety Measures for Patrons
As part of our commitment to the safety of the many patrons who visit the Alamo, a safety fence will be erected around the Cenotaph on Alamo Plaza during the Restoration Efforts. The fence will ensure the safety of everyone visiting the site while also providing a secure environment for the ongoing restoration work. It's important to note that these fences will not be covered or wrapped, allowing observers to view the important and needed restoration work taking place while maintaining a safe distance.

A Trusted Hand
Clark-Guido will be the project’s general contractor. They will provide unparalleled expertise and dedication to this restoration project. Guido built the foundation and concrete substructure of the Alamo Cenotaph over 80 years ago and holds a deep understanding of the importance of this cherished monument.

Looking to the Future
The restoration of the Alamo Cenotaph signifies a commitment to preserving Texas history and heritage. It is not just about repairing a structure; it is about safeguarding a symbol of sacrifice and valor for future generations to cherish and reflect upon. This project underscores our dedication to maintaining the cultural heritage of Texas, ensuring that the Alamo Cenotaph remains a timeless tribute.
