Today marked a historic moment for Texas as the Alamo officially began construction on the highly anticipated Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, a key project of the $550 million Alamo Plan. The ceremony, held in front of the new center and iconic Alamo Church, drew a crowd of supporters, public officials, and community members, all united in commemorating the beginning of the next chapter in the Alamo’s history.
The Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, scheduled for completion in 2027, will offer visitors an immersive journey through eight galleries spanning the Alamo’s 300-year history, from its origins as a Spanish mission to the Texas Revolution and beyond. Anchored in the historic Crockett Block, the facility will also feature a state-of-the-art 4D theater, a rooftop event space with panoramic views of San Antonio, and modern amenities, including a café and gift shop. This $185 million project is not just a building—it’s a transformative experience where the past and present converge.
Dignitaries in attendance included Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, General Land Office Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, and San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. These leaders spoke passionately about the significance of this project for the Lone Star State, which will preserve the Alamo’s 300-year history and enhance the visitor experience for years to come.
“The Alamo was the first place I visited when I came to Texas in 1979,” said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. “The Alamo means so much to me, as it does for millions of Texans, Americans, and people worldwide. The groundbreaking for the museum and visitors center represents a major milestone in elevating the Alamo to a world-class historic site, so people from around the world can learn about the ideals of freedom, liberty, and patriotism, and the fateful battle that took place in 1836. As Lt. Governor, I began funding this massive rebuild in 2015. When finished, it will be one of the finest historic sites in the world. I will never stop fighting to preserve and protect the story of the fight for independence, freedom, and liberty at the Alamo.”
Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham, M.D. echoed these sentiments, reminding the audience of the Alamo’s more profound meaning. “The Alamo is more than a landmark; it is the heart of Texas. It represents courage, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit of those who came before us. This new Visitor Center and Museum will be instrumental in ensuring that this legacy is passed on to future generations.”
During her remarks, Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of Alamo Trust, Inc., highlighted the significance of the moment, stating, “Today we are not just facing our destiny—we are shaping it. This project is a bold step toward ensuring that the history of the Alamo is preserved and that its lessons continue to inspire.” Dr. Rogers also underscored the lasting cultural and economic impact of the Visitor Center, Museum, and Alamo Plan, which, once completed in 2027, are anticipated to attract more than 2.5 million visitors to the Alamo annually.
The ceremony concluded in a symbolic fashion, with a proclamation read aloud in a manner reminiscent of how the beginnings of missions were historically announced. Following the proclamation, the dignitaries signed a large scroll, symbolizing their support for the project. In a gesture of unity, members of the community were then invited to participate in the signing, affirming their crucial role in preserving the legacy of the Alamo.
This construction kickoff marks the start of a new era for the Alamo, ensuring its history continues to inspire Texans and visitors from around the world.
