Take home an artifact of your very own during Ceramics At The Alamo, a free, family-friendly event the Alamo's on-site archaeology team is hosting during Texas Archaeology Month.
Ceramics At The Alamo will take place on Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In collaboration with the Texas Historical Commission, the Alamo's archaeologists will show visitors how to make pinch pots. Described as "history in your hands," pinch pots demonstrate how pottery has been used for both everyday tasks and as artistic representations of culture. Archaeologists use broken pieces of pottery to learn more about the people who once lived at an excavation site and their daily activities.
The Alamo's archaeologists will hand out nearly 250 pinch pot kits that include a ball of clay and a wooden tool to make artistic decorations. These trained experts will also display ceramic artifacts that have been excavated on Alamo grounds, and teach the next generation about careers in archaeology.
Texas Archaeology Month takes place each October as a celebration of the state's history and heritage through the lens of archaeology. Visitors are often surprised to learn the Alamo is an active archaeological site. Over the past year, excavations outside the Long Barrack have uncovered thousands of extraordinary discoveries.
Come learn how archaeology is helping shape our understanding of the past during Ceramics At The Alamo!
