Bronze bell with artistic cross engraving design

This is one of the original bells for Mission San Antonio de Valero. It is the “Ave Maria” or "Angelus” Bell.

Originally used in the mission, this bell was found in the San Antonio River in 1845 and later given to John Twohig. He later gave it to Major T.L. Johnson who loaned it to Adina de Zavala, a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas who placed it in the Alamo.

When Major Johnson moved to California, the bell was taken with him and later sold to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas for the Alamo and placed in the Church in 1920. This bell is made of bronze.
