The Alamo is thrilled to announce the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Curtis C. Gunn, Jr. Conservation Laboratory at the Alamo, located within the recently opened Ralston Family Collections Center. The ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Curtis C. Gunn, Jr. Conservation Laboratory is a significant milestone for the preservation of the Alamo Collection. It will take place on May 18th at 11:30 a.m., coinciding with Historic Preservation Month.
The Curtis C. Gunn, Jr. Conservation Laboratory will be the first of its kind on the grounds of the Alamo, providing on-site care for the more than 4,000 items of the Alamo Collection, including the Phil Collins Collections and the Donald and Louise Yena Spanish Colonial Collection. This state-of-the-art laboratory will feature specialized equipment to assist the Alamo Conservator and Archaeologist in their vital work of investigating objects, analyzing samples, applying treatments, and repairing materials.
“Curtis loved history and was passionate about conservation, this city and this state,” said Sean Gunn, Chairman & CEO of Gunn Automotive. “I can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to have his name attached to a Conservation Laboratory in his hometown doing work for one of the most iconic historical sites in the World.”
Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of the Alamo Trust, Inc., said, "We are deeply grateful for the generous support from the Gunn Automotive Group and the Gunn family, which will help preserve the Alamo Collection for future generations. The opening of the Curtis C. Gunn, Jr. Conservation Laboratory is a significant step forward in our mission to protect and share the unique history and heritage of the Alamo."
This Conservation Laboratory will be the first official facility designed to handle small to large-sized archaeological and decorative arts objects and tiny samples harvested from the mission-era walls. This occasion will mark a significant advancement in the preservation of the Alamo Collection, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the cultural and historical significance of these treasured artifacts.
