The Alamo is excited to announce the successful completion of its second Alamo Teacher Institute (ATI) and its first-ever international professional development trip. From June 24-29, 2024, ten dedicated Texas educators, selected through a highly competitive process based on their compelling applications and the positive impact they have on Texas students, enjoyed an all-expenses-paid experience exploring the historical ties between Mexico and Texas in vibrant Mexico City. This groundbreaking trip provided participants with invaluable insights and teaching methodologies to enrich their curriculum and deepen their students' understanding of the Alamo's story through the interconnected lens of Texas and Mexican history.

The Alamo Teacher Institute represents a new and free resource the Alamo is providing for Texas educators, offering Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits. These professional development trips are designed to offer educators hands-on, immersive experiences at significant historical sites, enhancing the curriculum they bring back to their classrooms and enriching their students' learning experiences. The institute covered all travel, lodging, and site admission costs, thanks to generous support from donors and sponsors through the Remember the Alamo Foundation.

The itinerary included visits to key historical sites and museums, such as the Chapultepec Castle, the National Museum of Anthropology, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Highlights included viewing a flag captured by the Mexican army at the Battle of the Alamo and engaging with Mexican historians who provided unique perspectives on shared history.

Participants benefited from guided tours, lectures, and collaborative sessions with the Alamo’s Education team, fostering professional networks and expanding their historical knowledge. The immersive experience not only enhanced the participants' understanding of the historical context but also equipped them with innovative teaching strategies to bring back to their classrooms.

“We are thrilled with the success of our first international Alamo Teacher Institute,” said Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of the Alamo Trust, Inc. “This initiative underscores our dedication at the Alamo to supporting educators and enriching the educational experiences of students across Texas. The enthusiasm and feedback from participants have been overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to continuing this impactful program.”

The next Alamo Teacher Institute is scheduled for Fall 2024. Educators interested in future Alamo Teacher Institutes are encouraged to stay informed by visiting our website at thealamo.org.
