After many years of neglect, research has shown that the Cenotaph’s interior structure, made of metal and structural concrete, is deteriorating.
This has led to instability, movement, and damage to the outside stone panels that comprise the structure.
Evidence also has also shown that the Cenotaph’s foundation is compromised. The existing footing is 20 feet into the ground, and removal of the foundation would cause a lengthy disruption in Alamo Plaza. This means that repairing the current foundation is not an option. The decision was thus made to move the Cenotaph to a more fitting and respectful location while conducting much needed repairs and placing it on a new foundation.
