The Alamo fell into disrepair and remained unoccupied while San Antonio was part of the Republic of Texas. The U.S. Army arrived in Alamo Plaza in October 1845. They urgently needed space to house troops and supplies. As the war with Mexico was imminent, the U.S. Quartermaster leased the abandoned Alamo Church and Long Barrack from the City and Archdiocese.
