Davy Crockett's life on the frontier, accomplishments as a soldier, and career as a politician are expertly detailed through the letters of the alphabet. In entries such as A is for Alamo; K is for Benjamin Kitchen, Crockett's first schoolmaster; and B is for Betsy, the name of his famous rifle, Crockett comes to life in this biography for young readers. Complete with a timeline of important events in Crockett's life and vibrant illustrations, this read is a must for young students of the legendary man.
"We are living in a time in which our knowledge of history is slowly but surely fading. It is our duty to teach our children the rich history of America. This book about the legendary hero David Crockett is a fine example."
-Billy Bob Thornton, actor, David Crockett in The Alamo (2004)
The Alamo from A to Z
Twenty-six profiles tell the story of the most celebrated military engagement in all of Texas history. The action unfolds as M for Mexican Army and W for Women of the Alamo take their place in this tale of patriotic struggle. Although the battle was ultimately lost, it remained in the minds of Sam Houston’s army, spurring them on to win the Battle of San Jacinto and secure freedom for Texas.
Descriptions of various historical figures highlight their significance as Alamo participants. These characters include the legendary David Crockett; Lt. Col. James Bowie, inventor of the Bowie knife; and William King, a fifteen-year-old boy who broke through enemy lines to join Alamo defenders. A timeline of events gives a chronological look at this fateful battle.
